About SINA (Social Innovation Academy)
SINA (Social Innovation Academy) is a nonprofit organization established in 2014 that empowers marginalized youth aged 16-29, including African refugees and orphans, to become social entrepreneurs. The organization promotes self-organized learning spaces, fostering a model called "freesponsibility," which combines freedom and responsibility. This approach encourages participants to design their own curriculum and take on leadership roles, transforming them from passive aid recipients into active community leaders. SINA operates in at least six African countries, including Uganda, Kenya, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and has grown from one site with 20 scholars to over 900 across 18-20 independent communities. The organization focuses on equipping youth with personal, professional, and entrepreneurial skills through interactive learning sessions and mentorship. SINA supports the creation of youth-led social enterprises that address local challenges, such as waste management and food insecurity, while also providing trauma-informed wellbeing programs. Its mission is to create regenerative communities and promote self-sufficiency among young people.
